Dirt Work in Katy, TX

Dirt Work · Katy, TX

Ground cut and filled to the height the job needs

Dirt work is moving and shaping ground so it is ready for what comes next. Florida's Contracting and Land Services builds house pads and grades lots around Katy, Texas and the west side of Houston. We also put in gravel driveways and parking areas, and we level the ground after a demolition.

Site preparation for a new home starts with a pad at the right height. Other jobs start with a drive gone to washboard or a low spot that holds water. If the lot is still overgrown, clearing the build site comes first. Call or text (979) 824-2296, and we look at the ground and put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • House pads and building pads built to the height the job calls for
  • Grading and leveling with a finishing dozer
  • Pads built with clay and sand dug from a pond on the same land
  • Gravel driveways and parking areas for better access to a property
  • Washboard graded out of a worn gravel drive
  • Ground cut and leveled after a house or barn is torn down
  • Ground sloped so rain runs toward a ditch or a swale
  • Extra dirt loaded onto trucks with the excavator when it has to leave

How high does a house pad need to be in Fort Bend County?

A house pad is the raised, level bed of dirt that a slab is built on. It lifts the house so rain runs away from it. On rural lots, Fort Bend County's drainage rules set a new slab at least 2 feet above natural ground. A flood level or a nearby road can push that number higher.

Outside city limits, the county's new home permit asks for a survey or site plan and a simplified grading plan. Inside Katy city limits, a new home's floor must sit at least 18 inches above the top of the curb. Your surveyor or engineer sets the exact height, and we build the pad to it.

Gravel driveway installation and driveway grading

We put in gravel driveways and parking areas for better access to a property. The finishing dozer shapes the drive before any gravel goes down. Once the gravel is delivered, we spread it and grade the drive.

Washboard is the row of ripples that rattles a truck on a gravel drive. We grade the ripples out and give the drive a slight crown so rain sheds to the edges. Where the gravel has worn thin, more goes down before the last pass. We have graded the washboard out of a farm driveway.

Where a drive crosses a roadside ditch, a driveway culvert keeps the ditch flowing under the entrance. Outside city limits in Fort Bend County, a driveway connection to a county road needs a county permit. Inside Katy city limits, driveways are on the city's permit list.

Grading and leveling flat prairie ground around Katy

Federal soil scientists describe the Katy soil series as nearly level coastal prairie, with most slopes under 1 percent. Its sandy loam top layer sits on a clay loam subsoil that drains slowly. In wet spells, water can sit in the upper soil for short periods.

On ground this flat, a few inches of grade decide where the water goes. The finishing dozer pushes high spots into low ones and slopes the ground toward a ditch or a swale. Texas law bars diverting surface water so that its overflow damages another person's property. So water has to leave your lot without landing on the neighbor's.

After a house demolition, the ground where the house stood still needs work. Once the debris is loaded out, we cut the lot level for a new pad or a yard.

How We Work

How a Job With Florida's Contracting Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Call or text (979) 824-2296 and tell us what the land needs and where it is.

2

We look at the job

We come out to see the ground and how the machines get in. Point out any buried lines of your own, like the line to a water well or a barn.

3

The written quote

You get the quote in writing. Once you say yes, we set a date for the work.

4

The work

Brush gets mulched in place where that fits, and the digging follows the plan in the quote. Anything headed off the site gets loaded onto trucks we arrange.

5

Ready for what comes next

We clean up when the machines are done. The ground is then ready for its next use, like a house pad or a new fence.

FAQ

Dirt Work Questions, Answered

Common questions about dirt work around Katy and the west side of Houston. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (979) 824-2296

Can a house pad be built from dirt on my own land?
It can be, when the land has the right dirt to spare. We have built a pad from the clay and sand dug out of a customer's pond. If your land also needs pond construction, one dig can feed the pad. When the land runs short, fill comes in by truck.
How much does dirt work cost?
The price depends on how much dirt moves and whether any has to come in or leave by truck. The height of a pad and the length of a drive change it too. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts. Call or text (979) 824-2296.
Do I need a permit to raise or regrade my land?
Inside city limits, the city's permit office decides, and outside them, the county does. In unincorporated Fort Bend County, fill or a cut that changes the ground 6 inches or more needs a permit. Regrading and work in a floodplain need one too, so ask the county before work starts.
Do I need to call 811 before grading?
Texas law treats grading as digging once it disturbs soil 16 inches deep or more. The state's pipeline safety agency recommends an 811 call before any dig, at any depth. Locators mark the utility lines, but a private well line or a line out to a barn is not marked. Point those out before a machine starts.
Can you build a pad for a barn or a shop?
Yes. We build pads for barns and shops as well as for houses. In unincorporated Fort Bend County, an enclosed building or slab of 400 square feet or more needs a permit. The pad's height and size come from your plans.
Will grading fix a yard that holds water?
Grading helps when the ground has somewhere lower to send the water. We slope the yard toward a ditch or a swale so rain runs off. In a tight side yard between close-set houses, a French drain carries the water away instead.
