French Drain Installation in Katy, TX

French Drains · Katy, TX

For yards that hold water after a hard rain

The rain stops, but the water stays. It sits at the side gate or in a low spot of the lawn for days. French drain installation gives that water a path out of the yard. Downspout drain lines do the same for roof water.

Florida's Contracting and Land Services does French drain installation across Katy, Texas and the west side of Houston. We work in neighborhood yards and on farm ground, and we also handle land clearing in Katy. We look at the yard and put the quote in writing. Call or text (979) 824-2296.

What We Handle

Why Does a Katy Yard Hold Water After a Rain?

NOAA's 30-year climate averages put Katy's rain at about 49 inches a year. May is the wettest month on that record. Much of that rain lands on ground with almost no fall.

The USDA soil survey maps the Katy soil series over large areas between the Brazos and San Jacinto Rivers. It has a sandy loam top layer, and a subsoil with more clay starts 18 to 30 inches down. For short spells in the cool months and after heavy rain, water perches above that subsoil. Most of this ground slopes less than 1 percent.

Texas law makes the International Residential Code the building code for houses in its cities. That code asks for the ground to fall at least 6 inches in the first 10 feet from a house. Houses about 15 feet apart leave little room for that. Where lot lines block the fall, the code calls for drains or swales.

How a French Drain Moves Water Out of the Yard

A French drain is a trench with a perforated pipe in a bed of gravel. Water in the soil seeps into the gravel, then into the pipe. The pipe falls toward a lower spot and carries the water there.

A French drain is only as good as the spot it drains to. That spot has to sit lower than the wet area, like a ditch or a swale. In a narrow side yard, the French drain runs through the low, packed ground where water stands.

Roof water adds to the load. Downspouts that dump at the corner of a house cut ruts and wash out beds. We run gutter downspout drain lines underground to stop that erosion. The line carries roof water out to where the yard can take it.

Yard Drainage for Washouts and Farm Ground

A washout starts small, then each hard rain takes more of the yard. We backfill washouts with crushed granite for drainage to keep the yard from washing away. That fits a washout behind a bulkhead or along a bank that keeps losing soil.

On farm ground, the job is slope and ditch drainage. Runoff can cut gullies across a field and leave low spots under water. We build slope drainage that carries it off, and larger reshaping is dirt work for the finishing dozer. Where a ditch crosses a drive, a driveway culvert carries the water under it.

Our yard drainage work covers Katy and the west side of Houston. Fulshear, Brookshire, Sealy and Rosenberg are part of that service area, and so is East Bernard.

How We Work

How a Job With Florida's Contracting Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Call or text (979) 824-2296 and tell us what the land needs and where it is.

2

We look at the job

We come out to see the ground and how the machines get in. Point out any buried lines of your own, like the line to a water well or a barn.

3

The written quote

You get the quote in writing. Once you say yes, we set a date for the work.

4

The work

Brush gets mulched in place where that fits, and the digging follows the plan in the quote. Anything headed off the site gets loaded onto trucks we arrange.

5

Ready for what comes next

We clean up when the machines are done. The ground is then ready for its next use, like a house pad or a new fence.

FAQ

French Drains Questions, Answered

Common questions about French drains around Katy and the west side of Houston. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (979) 824-2296

Why does water hold right at my side gate?
In neighborhoods where houses sit about 15 feet apart, the side yard is a narrow strip. The mower packs it down pass after pass, and packed ground stops taking water. A French drain through that strip gives the water a way out.
How deep does a French drain go?
A state homeowner guide puts a simple yard French drain at 8 to 24 inches deep. A federal building guide calls for a trench at least 22 inches deep. The right depth depends on where the water sits and how low the outlet is. The state guide adds that deeper drains, or drains close to a foundation, call for a drainage contractor.
Can I drain my yard onto my neighbor's property?
Texas Water Code section 11.086 bars diverting surface water in a way that damages another person's property. So the outlet matters: the water has to go somewhere it will not flood the lot next door. If the line would end at the street, ask the city or your HOA first.
Do I need a permit for a French drain?
It depends on where the yard sits. Inside city limits the city's permit office decides; outside them, the county does. Fort Bend County's development permit covers work such as re-grading and drainage changes. The permit office answers that question, and we point you there.
Does a French drain need an 811 call first?
Often, yes. Texas law calls for an 811 request at least two working days before a dig 16 inches or deeper. A French drain trench can reach that depth. Locators mark utility lines, not private lines like sprinklers, so point those out before work starts.
How much does French drain installation cost?
The price follows the job: the length of the run and how far it is to an outlet. Downspout lines and a tight side gate change it too. We look at the yard first, then put the quote in writing. For market numbers, see what French drains cost in the Houston area.
