Culvert installation puts a pipe under your driveway so the road ditch can still carry water. Florida's Contracting and Land Services sets driveway culverts and builds the entrance on top of them. We build these entrances off county roads and farm roads around Katy, Texas and the west side of Houston. The pipe carries the ditch water, and the approach carries your truck.
On a new lot, the entrance can go in right after land clearing for the house site. On farm ground, a gate entrance needs room to pull a truck and trailer off the road. The office in charge of the road issues the permit and sets the pipe size, and we build to that. We also grade the washboard out of gravel drives.
Tell us about the land, the fence or the drainage problem and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
It depends on who runs the road in front of your property. A county road goes through that county's road and bridge or engineering office. A state highway goes through the local TxDOT office. FM roads belong to the state highway system, so a drive onto FM 359 starts there too.
Katy spans parts of three counties, so a Katy address can fall in any of them. Inside Katy city limits, the city code requires a permit before any pipe goes in a city ditch. City staff set the pipe size and grade, then inspect the pipe before it is covered. The code lets the city remove a pipe that went in without a permit.
On Fort Bend County roads with open ditches, homes and ag-exempt land start with the county's road and bridge department. The county's page says that department can assist with a basic gravel driveway connection. Inside Rosenberg, the city sets residential driveway culverts itself, and the homeowner buys the pipe. Where the road office sets the pipe itself, we can still build the drive behind it.
Work in the ditch starts after the road office says yes. On a state highway, TxDOT also wants 24 hours' notice first. We dig the pipe bed to the grade the road office gives. If the office inspects the pipe before it is covered, the backfill waits for that visit.
Backfill goes in around the pipe with the material the road office calls for. Then we build the approach up over the pipe and shape it to meet the road edge. TxDOT asks for a drive that matches the pavement edge and lets water drain away from the road.
A farm gate needs room in front of it. TxDOT's manual says the gate should sit far enough back to hold the longest rig that uses it. At the least, that means a pickup with a trailer. On a county road, ask the county what it wants there.
Washboard means rows of small ridges across a gravel drive. A federal gravel road manual names hard starts and hard stops as a major cause. That is why ridges can show up near a drive, where trucks slow down to turn in. Dry weather and poor gravel add to it.
The manual says grading in dry weather only smooths the ridges for a while. The fix is to cut below the dips between the ridges, then lay the gravel back in shape. We grade the ridges out and give the drive a crown so rain runs off the sides. Even with good upkeep, the manual says some washboard always comes back.
A new gravel drive from the entrance to the house falls under our dirt work. Water that stands in the yard, away from the road ditch, is a job for French drain installation.

Call or text (979) 824-2296 and tell us what the land needs and where it is.
We come out to see the ground and how the machines get in. Point out any buried lines of your own, like the line to a water well or a barn.
You get the quote in writing. Once you say yes, we set a date for the work.
Brush gets mulched in place where that fits, and the digging follows the plan in the quote. Anything headed off the site gets loaded onto trucks we arrange.
We clean up when the machines are done. The ground is then ready for its next use, like a house pad or a new fence.
