Pond Construction in Katy, TX

Pond Construction · Katy, TX

New stock ponds and bigger ponds on your acreage

Florida's Contracting and Land Services handles pond construction on acreage around Katy, Texas and the west side of Houston. We dig new stock ponds and small ponds, and we expand ponds that are already there. We work for farm and ranch owners and for homeowners on acreage. Our main line of work is land clearing in Katy and the towns around it.

If the pond site is grown up, land clearing comes first. After the dig, we shape and finish the banks. The clay and sand that come out can build a pad or raise low ground nearby. Tell us where you want the dirt when we look at the job.

What We Handle

  • New stock ponds and small ponds dug on acreage
  • Existing ponds expanded and reshaped
  • Pond digging with a midsize excavator of about 40,000 pounds
  • Clay and sand from the dig used for a pad or to raise low ground
  • Pond banks shaped and finished after the dig
  • Trees and brush mulched around a pond with a skid steer mulching head
  • Pond jobs picked up where a landowner's own dig left off
  • Small watering areas built to stand up to feral hogs

Pond Digging on Farm and Ranch Land Around Katy, Texas

The land around Katy is flat coastal prairie. On level ground like this, a pond is dug out rather than dammed. The federal pond handbook calls these excavated ponds the simplest kind to build on flat land. Where the pond sits matters, since Texas law bars holding back runoff in a way that damages a neighbor's land.

We dig stock ponds for livestock and small ponds for homeowners on acreage. One customer started his own pond and found the job was more than he wanted. We came in and built it the way he asked.

We have also built a small bird watering area made to stand up to feral hogs that root around it. Around a new retention pond, we mulched the trees with the mulching head on our skid steer.

Will the Soil on Your Land Hold Pond Water?

A pond holds water when the soil under it has enough clay. The federal pond handbook rates clays and silty clays as excellent for this. It calls coarse sand and sand-gravel mixes usually unsuitable.

The federal soil survey describes Katy fine sandy loam from a site near where FM 1093 meets FM 1463. It has 18 to 30 inches of sandy loam on top, with clay loam layers below. A dig there turns up sandy loam first, then clay loam.

Down US 90A west of Rosenberg, the survey describes Bernard clay loam, which water moves through very slowly. When you are unsure of your ground, the handbook suggests test holes across the pond site. Filling a test hole with water gives a rough read on seepage. Ponds nearby on the same soil are a good guide too.

What Happens to the Dirt From a Pond Excavation?

Pond excavation turns up a lot of dirt, and it can go to work on your land. On one job, we built a pad with the clay and sand we pulled from the customer's pond. Pads and leveling are part of our dirt work across the area.

The federal pond handbook says to plan where the dirt goes before digging starts. Dirt left near the pond should not weigh down the banks or wash back in with rain. The handbook sets the foot of a dirt pile at least 12 feet back from the pond's edge.

The handbook calls full removal expensive and rarely worth it unless the dirt is needed nearby. When dirt does have to leave, we load it onto trucks and the trucking is arranged.

We come out to see the ground and how the machines get in. Point out any buried lines of your own, like the line to a water well or a barn.

3

The written quote

You get the quote in writing. Once you say yes, we set a date for the work.

4

FAQ

Pond Construction Questions, Answered

Common questions about pond construction around Katy and the west side of Houston. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (979) 824-2296

What does pond construction cost?
The size and depth you want drive the price. Clearing the site adds to it, and so does moving the dug dirt. Getting the excavator to your land is part of it too. Call or text (979) 824-2296, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Can you make my existing pond bigger?
Yes. Pond expansion is part of our work. We dig an existing pond wider or deeper and reshape the banks. Brush and trees crowding the old bank can be cleared first with forestry mulching.
Do I need a permit to dig a pond in Texas?
Texas water law lets you build a household and livestock pond on your land without a state water permit. That covers up to 200 acre-feet of normal storage, and local rules still apply. Unincorporated Fort Bend County asks for a permit when a dig changes the ground level 6 inches or more. Inside city limits, the city's permit office decides.
Does pond digging need an 811 call first?
Texas law calls for notice to Texas 811 at least 48 hours before digging 16 inches or deeper. Weekends and legal holidays do not count. The law exempts farm and ranch work on private land, but the state recommends the call anyway. Lines that serve only your place, like a water well line, are yours to point out.
How long does a new pond take to fill?
A dug pond fills from rain and the runoff that drains toward it. The more land that drains to the pond, the faster it can fill. The weather sets the date, so a dry spell can leave a new pond low for a while.
Do you dig ponds outside Katy?
Yes. Katy sits at the center of our service area, which runs north to Hempstead and south to Sargent. Acreage around Sealy and East Bernard is part of it too.
