Digging and trenching on lots and acreage around Katy

Excavation is digging into the ground and moving what comes out of it. Florida's Contracting and Land Services is an excavation contractor serving Katy, Texas and the west side of Houston. Our excavators dig trenches for drain lines, dig out and move dirt, break out old concrete and load out trucks. The work is for homeowners on acreage and in neighborhoods, and for farmers and ranchers.

As an excavation company, we run a midsize excavator of about 40,000 pounds and a zero tail swing excavator. A finishing dozer and a skid steer with a mulching head round out the equipment. A new pond falls under pond construction, and a pipe under a drive falls under culvert installation. Call or text (979) 824-2296, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Which Machine Does Which Part of an Excavation Job?

Our excavation services split the work by machine. The midsize excavator does the heavy digging and breaks out old concrete. When dirt or debris has to leave the site, it loads the trucks, and the trucking is arranged.

The zero tail swing excavator works in the woods and in tight spots. Its upper body stays within the width of its tracks through a full turn. That lets it dig close to trees or a fence.

The finishing dozer spreads and levels the dug dirt once the digging is done. The skid steer carries a mulching head, so brush on the dig site can be mulched in place first. Taking down a house or barn and loading the debris is part of our house and barn demolition work.

Digging in the Clay Ground Around Katy, Texas

Around Katy, the federal soil survey describes 18 to 30 inches of fine sandy loam on top. Under it sits a clay loam subsoil, and water moves through this soil moderately slowly.

In the cool months or a wet spell, water can sit in that upper layer for short periods. A trench dug then can take on water.

South toward Rosenberg and East Bernard, the ground is Lake Charles clay. In dry spells it cracks 1/2 to 2 inches wide at the surface. The cracks stay open a total of 60 to 90 days in most years. Water enters the open cracks fast, but once the clay is wet and they close, it enters very slowly.

Trenching Around Katy and the Texas Rules for Digging

Our trenching covers drain lines, such as downspout drain lines and French drains, and trenches for power lines. We have dug trenches from a utility pole to a shop, out to a backyard patio and to a camper's power hookup. The electrical work itself belongs to an electrician. On one job, we put in gutter drains and French drains to stop erosion from roof downspouts. That work has its own French drain installation page.

Texas law counts mechanized digging as excavation once it disturbs soil 16 inches deep or more. Whoever plans that dig must notify 811 at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays. The law leaves out some farm and ranch work on private land. The state's pipeline safety agency still recommends calling 811 before any dig, regardless of depth.

Federal workplace safety rules draw a line at 5 feet. An excavation 5 feet deep or more needs a protective system, such as sloping or shoring, unless it is cut entirely in stable rock. A shallower dig can go without one when a competent person finds no sign of a possible cave-in.

How We Work

How a Job With Florida's Contracting Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Call or text (979) 824-2296 and tell us what the land needs and where it is.

2

We look at the job

We come out to see the ground and how the machines get in. Point out any buried lines of your own, like the line to a water well or a barn.

3

The written quote

You get the quote in writing. Once you say yes, we set a date for the work.

4

The work

Brush gets mulched in place where that fits, and the digging follows the plan in the quote. Anything headed off the site gets loaded onto trucks we arrange.

5

Ready for what comes next

We clean up when the machines are done. The ground is then ready for its next use, like a house pad or a new fence.

FAQ

Excavation Questions, Answered

Common questions about excavation around Katy and the west side of Houston. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (979) 824-2296

How much does excavation cost?
The price starts with how much dirt moves and how deep the dig goes. Where the dirt ends up matters, since trucks to carry it off add to the job. Wooded or tight spots count too, and so does getting the excavator to your land. We look at the job and put the quote in writing, so call or text (979) 824-2296.
What happens to the dirt you dig out?
Dug dirt can often stay and build a pad or fill a low spot through our dirt work. We have built a pad with the clay and sand we pulled from a customer's pond. When material has to leave, we load the trucks and the trucking is arranged. Where fill goes matters, since Texas law bars diverting surface water in a way that damages another person's property.
Can an excavator work in the woods or a tight spot?
Yes. Our zero tail swing excavator is the machine for wooded ground and tight spots. If brush or small trees block the way, land clearing on lots and small acreage can open the site first.
Who marks the private lines on my property?
After an 811 notice, pipeline and utility companies send locators to mark the approximate spot of their buried lines with flags or paint. The state's dig law does not cover a line that serves only the owner and sits only on the owner's property. So a well line or a line out to a barn is yours to point out before digging starts.
Do I need a permit to dig on my land?
Inside city limits, the city's permit office decides, and outside them, the county does. Unincorporated Fort Bend County requires a permit for fill or excavation over 500 cubic yards per acre. The same goes for a change of 6 inches or more in the ground's height. Work that disturbs an acre or more of soil and sends stormwater to surface water is regulated under the state's construction stormwater permit.
