How Much Does a Gravel Driveway Cost in the Houston Area?

A national cost guide updated in October 2026 puts the average gravel driveway at $1,800. Most homeowners pay between $500 and $3,500, it says. A 2025 national guide puts a gravel driveway or road at $1.25 to $4.00 per square foot.

These are market numbers, not our price list. A long rural drive on acreage around Katy, Texas can run well past the average. Our gravel driveway installation page covers the drives and parking areas we build on the west side of Houston.

What do national cost guides say a gravel driveway costs?

Here are the published figures side by side:

The 2026 guide also prices drives by size, with labor:

Drive size2026 guide range
200 to 300 square feet, single car$250 to $900
400 to 600 square feet, double car$800 to $2,200
1,000 square feet or more, large or circular$1,000 to $5,000
2,000 square feet, long rural drive$3,500 to $6,000 or more

The second 2026 guide says labor is about half the total. Gravel driveway cost moves with each factor below.

What drives the cost of a gravel driveway?

Length and width. The second 2026 guide says length and width have the biggest impact on the total cost. It figures 1 ton of gravel covers about 60 square feet at 4 inches deep. By its math, a drive 100 feet long and 10 feet wide takes about 13 to 17 tons.

Cutting the base. Site prep clears plants and debris, then grades a level, firm base. The same guide says challenging terrain raises labor costs by 20 to 50 percent. Texas law counts machine digging or grading 16 inches deep or more as excavation. That work needs an 811 notice at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays.

Fabric over wet clay. Around Katy, the federal soil survey puts the soils on flat coastal prairie, mostly on slopes under 1 percent. Toward Rosenberg and East Bernard, the ground is Lake Charles clay. Its cracks stay open 60 to 90 days in most years. The federal gravel road guide gives one fix for weak, wet soil under a road. A fabric or grid goes over the soil before the new rock. Ask for the fabric as its own line in the quote.

The rock and how deep. The 2026 guide puts gravel at $10 to $50 per ton and recommends a depth of 4 to 6 inches. The second 2026 guide calls for at least 5 to 6 inches, laid in layers. It says drives that carry trucks or RVs need 8 to 12 inches. Deeper rock means more tons.

Delivery. The 2026 guide puts delivery at $100 to $500 per load, depending on distance. The second 2026 guide says rural properties may face higher delivery fees. On our jobs, the trucking is arranged.

A culvert at the ditch. Where the drive crosses a roadside ditch, a culvert pipe carries the water under the entrance. The second 2026 guide puts culverts or drains at $500 to $2,000. Our driveway culvert installation page covers that part of the job.

Brush on the route. The 2026 guide adds $500 to $2,000 for clearing brush or trees. We mulch brush in place where that fits.

Old concrete that has to come out first. An old concrete drive has to come out before the rock goes down. The 2026 guide lists $1,300 for demolishing concrete. The 2025 guide puts concrete removal at about $970. Our concrete removal page covers breaking out and loading out old concrete.

Which gravel is best for a driveway in Texas?

The published prices per ton overlap, so the rock you pick and the haul both matter:

Rock2026 guide, per tonSecond 2026 guide, per ton with delivery
Crushed limestone$30 to $40Not listed
Crushed stoneNot listed$30 to $60
Crusher runNot listed$25 to $50
Caliche$30 to $100Not listed
Pea gravel$20 to $80$50 to $100
River rock$45 to $100$60 to $150

The 2025 guide puts caliche at about $65 per cubic yard, or $40 to $150 per ton. River rock tops the second guide’s list. None of the three guides lists a price for crushed concrete, so ask the supplier.

The state transportation department’s road base spec sorts base rock by type. Type A is crushed stone, such as crushed limestone, the higher-quality base. Type D allows Type A material or crushed concrete. Type E is caliche, iron ore or new materials shown on the plans.

The federal gravel road guide says good surface gravel is a blend of stone, sand and fines. A crushed limestone driveway and a caliche driveway both use rock from the state list. A crushed concrete driveway does too. Ask which type you are getting and how many inches go down.

Do you need a permit where the driveway meets the road?

In unincorporated Fort Bend County, a driveway connection to a county maintained road needs a county permit. Harris County’s 2025 rules say no driveway or culvert goes on county right of way without a permit first. A drive onto a state highway needs the state transportation department’s Form 1058, through its local district office. Inside city limits, ask the city.

The 2026 guide puts permit costs at $50 to $300, depending on location. Our Fort Bend County driveway culvert permit guide shows which office issues it. Rules change, so the office that runs your road has the final word.

How do you keep a gravel driveway from washboarding?

Washboard is the row of ripples that rattles a truck on a gravel drive. The federal gravel road guide says it often gets blamed on the grader. The guide says the material itself is the main cause. It recommends about 1/2 inch of crown per foot, near 4 percent. Crown means the center sits higher than the edges, so rain runs off.

The 2026 guide puts upkeep such as regrading at $100 to $400 a year. We grade the washboard out of gravel drives, as we did on a farmer’s driveway.
